— Open Call
Ca'Buccari invites artists, architects, and researchers from all cultural backgrounds and interests to apply for a one-month residency in our spaces in Venice.

Preference will be given to applicants whose research or work creatively engages with the contemporary Venetian cultural and social-spatial context.

We strongly advise people from all cultural backgrounds and interests to apply!

The only condition for this residency is a sincere interest in a contemporary cultural understanding of Venice's social and spatial realities and potential.

This results in a tangible document and public presentation, a workshop, or project proposal for potential future realization at Ca'Buccari.

— Residency Space
The residency space consists of three interconnected spaces, a large, well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a large studio space, and a bedroom with a double bed—with a total of 90sqm. Recidency Space PDF.

All spaces open up to a large arched arcade connected to a public park bordering the lagoon. The area is a quiet and residential area on the Southeast end of Venice, close to the Lido beaches and a 5-minute walk from the Giardini di Biennale.

Open call for international artists for a summer residency at Ca'Buccari for a period of four weeks between 14.07–18.08.2024.

— Participation
Participation in the residency is free of charge. Applicants must cover their own travel and living expenses. The residency space allows a single person or couple to live and work here; it is not suited for more than two people at a time.

If needed, a fully equipped apartment nearby, sleeping 4, is available for rent during the residency period.

— Ca’Buccari
Ca'Buccari is a private nonprofit organization. We do not receive funding and are not in a position to award funding ourselves. However, if needed, we do write letters of recommendation for participants who apply for international public funding themselves.

This residency aims to support artists working in spatial, visual, and sound-related practices and offers an outstanding environment for exploration, experimentation, focus, and research.

The font and characters for Ca'Buccari are inspired by the specific location of the building and the numerous routes within the city to reach it. The shapes that form the characters of the identity were taken from actual top views of Venice, and their arrangement allows the audience to form paths while reading the text, as it occurs when walking.

Published in the context of the eponymous exhibition, Pervert or Detective? is a provocative conversation on the erotic, appropriation, power, and sex.

Through an expansive discussion with French art critic Marie Canet, Maybury and McKenzie interrogate the logic of seduction and domination, pushing against rigid binaries to probe the material erotic, appropriation, and transformation. With an introduction by curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen, an afterword by writer Susan Finlay, and extensive reading and viewing lists, Pervert or Detective? offers a compelling exchange between artists committed to unsettling the familiar and redefining artistic agency.

The exhibition and publication reveal the extent to which the two artists' positions converge, crystallising around shared concerns with sexuality, gender, power, and labor — which function not only as themes but as structuring forces within both of their practices.
