The brick-wall motif is a recurring reference in Experimental Jetset's work, rooted in their long-standing research into Provo, the Amsterdam anarchist movement of the mid-1960s. The pattern derives from the first issues of Provo magazine, whose covers featured a brick-pattern dollhouse wallpaper — which Experimental Jetset enlarged to actual-scale proportions, underscoring the relationship between the city as built environment and the printed page.

This investigation found a new chapter in their 2024 site-specific installation Beyond the Space of Fragile Geometry, where posters based on the standard Amsterdam brick size were shown alongside a new adaptation calibrated to the dimensions of the Venetian brick — a quiet but precise translation of one city's fabric into another's.

Experimental Jetset is an independent graphic design collective based in Amsterdam, founded in 1997 by Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers, and Danny van den Dungen. Known for their highly conceptual approach, they describe their working method as "translating language into objects," with a practice focused on printed matter, site-specific installations, and visual identities. Their work consistently explores the relationship between language, design, and the city, and is held in the permanent collections of institutions including MoMA New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

The font and characters for Ca'Buccari are inspired by the specific location of the building and the numerous routes within the city to reach it. The shapes that form the characters of the identity were taken from actual top views of Venice, and their arrangement allows the audience to form paths while reading the text, as it occurs when walking.

Iván Martínez is a graphic designer based in Mexico City, specializing in the editing, design, and production of artist books and culture-related publications. His work develops fictional spatial narratives and publications inspired by the aesthetics of rumor and its mechanisms of propagation.

He trained at UAM Xochimilco in Mexico City and completed his master's studies at ArtEZ / Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem, followed by a residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. His clients include institutions such as Palais de Tokyo, Portikus, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Stedelijk Museum, Museo Jumex, and MUAC.

Published in the context of the eponymous exhibition, Pervert or Detective? is a provocative conversation on the erotic, appropriation, power, and sex.

Through an expansive discussion with French art critic Marie Canet, Maybury and McKenzie interrogate the logic of seduction and domination, pushing against rigid binaries to probe the material erotic, appropriation, and transformation. With an introduction by curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen, an afterword by writer Susan Finlay, and extensive reading and viewing lists, Pervert or Detective? offers a compelling exchange between artists committed to unsettling the familiar and redefining artistic agency.

The exhibition and publication reveal the extent to which the two artists' positions converge, crystallising around shared concerns with sexuality, gender, power, and labor — which function not only as themes but as structuring forces within both of their practices.

In Pervert or Detective?, artists Reba Maybury and Lucy McKenzie dissect power, desire, and subversion in a provocative conversation. Maybury, who integrates her work as a political dominatrix into her artistic practice, manipulates dynamics of control, compelling her male submissives to create art under her direction, only to claim it as her own. Through confession and humiliation, she dismantles notions of authorship, masculinity, and labor. McKenzie, known for her intricate trompe l’oeil paintings and conceptual installations, similarly blurs boundaries—between art and commerce, and authenticity and illusion. Her work challenges power structures and exposes the unstable nature of representation.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Reba Maybury is an artist, writer, and dominatrix sometimes working under the name Mistress Rebecca. Her work explores the tension between her perceived strength as an object of fantasy and how through the reality of sex work she attempts to turn this power into something tangible. She has published Dining with Humpty Dumpty (2017) and Faster than an Erection (2021). Themes of capital, labor, sexuality, female perversion, desire, banality, pleasure, bureaucracy as torture, and humiliation are essential themes to her practice. Maybury has exhibited at SIMIAN, Copenhagen; Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome; Luma Westbau, Zurich; HFKD, Holstebro, Denmark; Arcadia Missa, London; and Company Gallery, New York.

Lucy McKenzie is an artist whose work encompasses painting, installation, design, fiction, and curation. Her work as a painter is often preoccupied with outlying forms, including public murals and sculptures, schemes of decorative interiors, map making, and institutional display, among others. McKenzie has had solo exhibitions at Z33, Hasselt, BE; Meyer Kainer, Vienna; La Verrière, Brussels; Tate Liverpool, Liverpool; Galerie Daniel Buchholz, New York; Museum Brandhorst, Munich; Art Institute of Chicago; the Artist’s Institute, New York; and Museum Ludwig, Cologne, among others.
