Francesco Cagnin is a collector of words with a specific interest in the poetic qualities of the Venetian dialect, and in language as it is spoken, remembered and forgotten, mispronounced and reinvented. During his residency he will build a collection of words and recordings of Venetian expressions, with the ultimate goal of creating a filastrocca – a short piece of poetry, characterised by simple language, a lively rhythm, and frequent rhymes or assonances.
An artist born in Mirano, on the mainland of Venice, and based in Zurich, Switzerland, Francesco Cagnin studied at IUAV (Venice), SOMA (Mexico City), and graduated at ECAL (Lausanne) in 2016. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Autokomanda Belgrade, Kunsthalle Zürich, Centre d’Art Contemporain Geneva, and the 16th Quadriennale di Roma.
